Pour-over coffee accentuates intricate flavors when compared to other brewing methods. It’s a popular way of brewing fresh cups of joe. However, have you ever seen your local barista use a pour-over brewer? If so, you may be intimidated to try pour-over coffee at home.

The Kalita Wave Pour Over Coffee Maker is known for offering a nice balance of high-quality brews and approachability. It was developed by Kalita – a Japanese family-owned brand that has been making coffee equipment since the 1950s.

How does the Kalita Wave compare to its counterparts? We’ll cover this and more in this product review.

Who is the Kalita Wave Coffee Maker For?

The Kalita Wave occupies a level between master and novice. This makes it a great pour-over device for just about any coffee-obsessed person. Better yet? It’s extremely easy to use, requiring little practice to perfect. Unlike cone drippers, the Kalita has a wide cone with a flat underside. This slows down the flow of water giving users more control over their brew.

What Makes This Pour Over Coffee Maker Special?

The patented design of this brewer offers a balanced extraction and full-bodied cup of joe every time. Here are some of the benefits we came across when tinkering with the Kalita Wave:

Easy to Use

If you’re a novice to pour-over brewing, the Kalita Wave 185 is a good place to start. While cone drippers require steady, consistent grinds and pours, the Kalita isn’t as extreme. It offers a flat bottom with three holes that allow water to permeate and drip evenly.

Brewing with the Kalita Wave 185 was very straightforward. It required us to bring some water to about 200°F. While that was boiling, we prepared our Kalita by placing a filter into the Wave dripper and putting about 15 grams of medium-coarse ground coffee. Next, we poured 50 grams of water over the coffee grounds and let the Kalita get to work.

Once the grounds bloomed, we continued to pour additional hot water in a circular motion, watching the coffee drip into the cup. When the coffee was ready, we simply threw the used filter out, rinsed the Kalita, and set it away to dry.

Fits Most Cups

This pour-over coffee maker is likely to fit your favorite mugs or carafes. It has a dripping area diameter of 2” and the flat bottom measures 4” across. This ensures the coffee dripper fits nicely on any cup or carafe without having to worry about spills over the edges.

Satisfaction Guaranteed

Kalita is a family-owned company that strives to deliver top customer satisfaction. We didn’t experience any issues with this pour-over device during the testing phase, but it’s nice knowing that if we do, Kalita has our back.

Why Should I Buy This Pour Over Coffee Maker?

The Kalita Wave 185 unique brewing design results in a more robust taste than other pour-over brewers. It does require a coarser than usual grind size, which leads to bolder cups of coffee. Priced affordably, you won’t break the bank when you decide to purchase this pour-over brewer.
