Do Keurigs make espresso? You may be surprised to find that these machines do a little more than just brew regular coffee at the push of a button. You can trick them into making super-strong java that resembles delicious espresso. While you won’t receive the best shot of java you’ve ever had, your Keurig brewing can make something close to it!

Keep reading to learn how to make espresso using your Keurig coffee maker.

Do Keurigs Make Espresso?

The short answer: not really. Keurigs are designed to brew regular black coffee, so you’ll be able to create this caffeinated drink to an extent. There are two things you need to make a quality shot of espresso: hot water and high pressure. Spoiler alert: Keurig machines don’t use pressure; therefore, you’ll never be able to achieve authentic espresso. However, don’t feel defeated just yet! There is a silver lining if all you have is a Keurig machine to work with. What are your options? Well, you can make small cups of concentrated coffee. By making the strongest cups possible, you’ll get super strong, caffeinated coffee. You may even get lucky and see a little bit of crema.

How to Make Espresso Using a Keurig

If you’re determined about making espresso using your Keurig, here are some steps you can try. Again, it won’t taste as good as the real thing, but it may just be close enough for your palette.

Ingredients

  • Dark Roast K-Cups
  • Water

Equipment

  • Keurig machine
  • Full-size coffee mug
  • Espresso cups

Step-By-Step Guide

The next time you’re craving espresso, but have limited options to obtain it, remember that you can have a delicious cup of bold coffee all in the comfort of your home. Here is how to make some strong java using your beloved Keurig machine:
  • Use the Right K-Cup. Espresso is known for its dark and strong flavors so choose a dark roast K-Cup.
  • Add Water to the Reservoir. You want to use the least amount of water possible. For instance, for the Keurig Mini, this will be 6 ounces. The coffee to water ratio when making espresso is 1:2. This means you want to use one part coffee for every two parts of water.
  • Place a Cup Under the Brew Head. Place your favorite mug underneath the brew head. Don’t use an espresso cup. While they look cute, they don’t work well for Keurigs. You’ll likely get splashes and overflows so utilize a large cup.
  • Press Brew. Hit the brew button once your mug is securely in place. You should see dark java flowing into your cup.
  • Serve and Enjoy. Pour the coffee into small espresso cups to make this drink feel more like the real thing. You won’t get a lot of crema, but drinking out of these small mugs will make your drink feel more like the real thing. So sit back and enjoy!

Can You Use Espresso in K-Cups?

You may be wondering whether you can use ground espresso in your reusable K-Cup. After all, isn’t this the best way to nail down the taste? Not quite…  Espresso grind is much too fine for a reusable K-Cup filter. This means that the water won’t be able to go through the grounds causing an overflow. If you want to use espresso roast coffee, purchase whole bean coffee and grind it to medium.

Is It Time to Buy an Espresso Machine?

Making espresso with a Keurig is simple. However, if you’re a huge espresso enthusiast, know that using your Keurig machine to make some probably won’t impress you too much. In this case, it may be time to invest in an espresso machine. With one, you’ll easily be able to create barista-grade brews and make your favorite beverages among them cappuccinos, americanos, mochas, cafe lattes, and more! There is also the option of investing in a stovetop espresso maker if you’re looking for a wallet-friendly option. In the meantime, using your Keurig will do. Happy brewing!
