How Does a Nespresso Machine Work?

By Admin September 23, 2021

Nespresso machines are a godsend for those who have given them a try. However, for a first-timer, learning how a Nespresso works can be a bit confusing. Lucky for you, you came to the right place. Our love for coffee and all things espresso has made us more than experts on the Nespresso machines, so you can jump onboard running full force.

We have a short and simple list explaining how Nespresso works to get you started. Let’s not waste any time! There is a lot of ground to cover after all.

What is Nespresso?

Nespresso machines are single-serve espresso machines that can bring you the velvety cup of joy we know as espresso in just a few seconds. It uses pods to create a unique cup for you without the hassle of operating a large espresso maker or worrying about serving an entire room. If you are just hearing about Nespresso for the first time, hop on over to our plethora of Nespresso reviews showing the best options for each person’s needs.

How Does Nespresso Work?

Nespresso is a relatively simple machine to operate. All you need is water, a Nespresso pod, and possibly some milk if you have a built-in frother with your machine. Before we get into step by step instructions, let’s go over each part of the machine that all Nespresso’s have.

1. Water Reservoir

The most important component of a Nespresso that you need to keep full is the water reservoir. It may be in different areas depending on your machine, but depending on how often you make coffee, you’ll need to fill it up around once a week or less.

2. Pod Holder

This is pretty self-explanatory. The pod holder holds the pod. Shocker. However, learning how to open the pod holder might be a bit more tricky. Typically the pod holder either has a lever to lift open or a large button to open the compartment. If neither of these are blatantly obvious, look up your specific Nespresso machine.

3. Interface

Another very important component is the interface. These are typically buttons but can be touchscreen if you opt for the really fancy versions. This is where you will choose what size of drink you want as well as if you would like a straight espresso shot or frothed milk with it if it is an option. On standard Nespressos, there are at least 2 size options.

4. Optional Milk Frother

This is pretty easy to spot on a Nespresso machine. However, it can be mistaken for the water reservoir if you aren’t careful. This is another container, but unlike the water reservoir, it has a spout where the frothed milk will pour into the mug. You will need to pull out the spout if you want to use the milk frother. Typically the button will not light up as an option unless you pull it out beforehand.

Be sure to rinse the milk frother out after each use to prevent spoiled milk. The frother is removable and relatively simple to clean, so no excuses!

5. Mug Opening

This is very important for pretty obvious reasons. The last thing we want is to start our Nespresso without a mug inserted to catch the yummy goodness. This is always directly beneath the pod holder and usually has an inserter that can be removed for larger mugs or travel cups.

Step by Step

Now that we know about each of the working parts, we can focus on the full step by step process of operating a Nespresso machine.

  1. Be sure to plug the machine in. Yes. A Nespresso does need power. When it is plugged in, the machine should light up to let you know it is ready to go.
  2. Fill the water reservoir. There should be a fill line to let you know how much water to add. This won’t be necessary every time you start the Nespresso, but for the first time and when it needs refills, this is a key step.
  3. Insert the pod. Remember that pod holder we spoke about? Choose your pod of choice and set it correctly in the holder. This insertion can be done a few different ways: directly facing down, on its side, or there could be an outlier with a different method. Be sure to insert it properly and shut the lid.
  4. Insert the mug. Before we start the brewing, set the mug in the opening to be sure there is no mess we need to clean up. You can adjust the inserter to fit the mug size.
  5. Select the size of drink you would like from the interface. If you choose a milk froth option, pull out the milk forth lever and let the Nespresso work its magic!
